W.I.S.E. WIU Students Study Abroad

While some of us are still bundled up in scarves and gloves, 26 Western Illinois University students are in sunny Salamanca, Spain.

WIU's Spanish Experience (W.I.S.E.) is a one-semester travel/study program in Spain offered by Western in cooperation with the Colegio de Espana in Salamanca and with the University of Castellon, Spain.

W.I.S.E. students attend the Colegio de Espana in Salamanca for two months, then move to Castellon for the third month. During their stay they are enrolled in a course of intensive language training. Students are able to earn 15 semester hours of credit applicable to a Spanish major or minor. Highlights of the trip include a tour of historic Segovia, Madrid, Toledo and El Escorial, as well as a tour of Andalusia including Sevilla, Cordoba and Granada.

WIU foreign languages and literature assistant professor Guadalupe Cabedo-Timmons, a native of the Castellon region, organized the study tour and is in Spain serving as the on-site coordinator.

Students studying in Spain this semester include Sandra Avendano, a freshman Spanish major of Coal Valley; Cristina Aviles, a sophomore law enforcement and justice administration major of Forest Park; Andrew Bryant, a senior Spanish major of White Hall; Michelle Camden, a sophomore political science major of South Beloit; Jesus Manuel Carrera, a junior law enforcement and justice of Palatine; Alicia Contreras, a freshman marketing of Aurora, Rodolfo Corona, a senior Spanish major of Blue Island; Lisa Crawford, a junior Spanish major of St. Elgin;

Juliann Dean, a senior law enforcement and justice administration major of Bloomingdale; William Duggan, a sophomore finance major of Orland Park; Bethany Fuller, a junior English major of Rochester; Jennifer Gamage, a junior Spanish major, Maria Madeira, also a junior Spanish major, and Andria Ward, a senior biological sciences major, all of Macomb; Aurora Garcia, a junior communication major of Blue Island; Rosalinda Holland, a senior Spanish major of Moline; Kathleen Huber, a senior marketing major of Alton;

Anna Jansson, senior music major of Schaumberg; Christopher Linbloom, a senior law enforcement and justice administration major of Dixon; Mary Maloney, a senior law enforcement and justice administration major of Oak Lawn; Rene Abe Motta, a senior Spanish major of Buffalo Grove; Mary Polhans, senior marketing major of Ottumwa, IA; and Maria Ramirez, a senior elementary education major of the 7000 block of S. Troy St.,Chicago; Erin Real, a senior Spanish major of Elgin; Rachel Remmers, a freshman Spanish major of Woodstock; and Angela Stock, a freshman Spanish major of Beardstown.
