MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - Western Illinois University's Law Enforcement and Justice Administration (LEJA) program has long been known for producing high-quality law enforcement professionals and one of its recent graduates, David Corso ('22), is now bringing that legacy to the Moline Police Department.

Corso recognized WIU's reputation for excellence in law enforcement education. The university's specialized courses and hands-on approach set it apart from other programs, offering students a competitive edge as they prepare for future careers. He credits WIU with providing a strong foundation in Illinois law, an advantage that became apparent while attending the police academy. Many of the legal theories, case laws and statutes covered in training were already familiar, making for a smoother transition into law enforcement. He emphasized that many new officers underestimate the importance of truly understanding the law and being able to apply it effectively in the field.

Among the most impactful experiences at WIU was a course taught by a former attorney from Baltimore, whose extensive courtroom experience provided invaluable insights into legal proceedings, evidence preparation and the broader workings of the criminal justice system. Corso recalled how this instructor's real-world knowledge deepened his understanding and reinforced the importance of thorough legal comprehension.

After six years of hard work and dedication, Corso is excited to begin serving the Moline community. He sees his new role as an opportunity to provide support and guidance to those in need. He has always been someone that others turn to for help and now he can do so in an official capacity.

As he steps into this new chapter, Corso plans to apply the skills he developed at WIU in his daily work, particularly when ensuring that legal elements are met before charging individuals with a crime. He stresses the importance of making legally sound decisions and ensuring that every step taken as an officer is backed by proper legal knowledge and application.

For current and prospective LEJA students aspiring to enter law enforcement, Corso encourages them to focus on their studies, take their coursework seriously and prepare themselves physically for the demands of the job. He also highlights the importance of communication skills, noting that officers interact with the public every day and must exude confidence and clarity in their speech.

He also advises students to be mindful of their associations, as surrounding oneself with positive influences can make a significant impact on long-term success in the field.

WIU continues to shape the next generation of law enforcement professionals, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and values needed to serve their communities. As a result, the Moline Police Department gains not only a well-trained officer but also a dedicated individual committed to making a meaningful impact.
