MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University's Shades of Vision, the BIPOC student organization within the Department of Theatre and Dance, traveled to St. Louis on January 15 to attend the St. Louis Black Repertory Company's production of "CHICKEN & BISCUITS." This trip was made possible through the generous support of departmental donors and the Dumela Alumni Council.

The Dumela Alumni Council was established to advocate for BIPOC students in WIU's Department of Theatre and Dance, fostering connections between current students, the department and professional alumni. Committed to its mission to "Be the Bridge," Dumela played a large role in the formation of Shades of Vision, further strengthening support and representation within the program.

Attending "CHICKEN & BISCUITS" at the St. Louis Black Rep provided Shades of Vision students with an opportunity to engage with a production celebrating Black storytelling, culture, and history. The St. Louis Black Rep has long been recognized for its dedication to uplifting Black artistry, and this experience highlighted the significance of representation in the performing arts. Through dynamic performances and a compelling narrative, students witnessed how theatre serves as a platform for amplifying Black voices, fostering cultural pride, and sparking meaningful conversations about identity, family, and community.
This experience reinforced the importance of diverse storytelling in the arts and encouraged students to continue exploring their creative journeys.
