MACOMB, IL - - The Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR) fraternity at Western Illinois University continues its long-standing tradition of giving back to the community, donating $13,000 this year to nine individuals and organizations in and around McDonough County. Funds were raised through the chapter's annual Smokin' Hog Philanthropy Event, now in its 32nd year.

"This event is more than just a fundraiser—it's a way for us to support those in need and honor those who have made an impact in our community," AGR Philanthropic Chair James Corrie said. "We are proud to give back to local families, first responders and future leaders in agriculture."

2024 Donation Recipients:

  • Cayden Mahr Memorial Scholarship – $2,000, honoring a Bushnell farmer who tragically lost his life in a combine accident

  • Macomb City Fire Department – $1,000

  • Macomb City Police Department – $1,000

  • WIU Office of Public Safety – $1,000

  • WIU Agriculture Vocators – $2,000, supporting recruitment efforts for the Agriculture Department

  • Garrett and I Scholarship Foundation – $2,000, in memory of a Rushville FFA student dedicated to agriculture

  • Chuck Lotz Memorial Scholarship – $2,000, in memory of a beloved AGR alumnus

  • Kylie Watson – $1,000, assisting with medical expenses for a local resident diagnosed with a rare muscular disease

  • Julie Flynn Family – $1,000, supporting a local father raising two children after his wife's passing

  • The Smokin' Hog event, entirely organized and run by AGR members, is a cherished WIU tradition. Members stay up all night smoking three hogs before preparing and serving meals to the community. The event concludes with a concert, historically held at the AGR chapter house but recently moved to The Ice House due to city regulations. The event draws around 400 attendees each year and is made possible through generous donations from local businesses, alumni and members' families.

Next fall, AGR will host the 33rd Smokin' Hog Philanthropy Event next fall, continuing its service and community support mission.
