MACOMB, IL - - Alumna Melanie Wier fondly reflects on the amazing community found at Western Illinois University.

"When I think about WIU, I think about the quality time in and outside of class with my fellow museum studies classmates," Wier said.

When thinking back on her time at WIU, Wier proudly remembers her graduation.

"My favorite Leatherneck memory is being the first to graduate from the Museum Studies graduate program," Wier said.

In her professional career, Wier credits the connections she made at WIU with helping her succeed.

"Building connections with classmates and Iowa museums helped prepare me for my career in museums," Wier said.

As a graduate student, Wier was involved on campus through her interest in museums. She held a graduate assistant position at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, IA and was the leader of the Graduate Experience for Museum Studies (GEMS) student organization.

Wier's advice to prospective students considering WIU is to take advantage of the community.

"Find your tribe and challenge each other to become better," Wier said.

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students, alumni, faculty and staff to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
