MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University alum Dave Markward MS Ed `76 returned to campus in March to discuss his recently published book, "From Dubuque to Selma and Beyond: My Journey to Understand Racism in America."

Markward, a former Rock Island-Milan and Cedar Rapids School District Superintendent, shared insights and engaged with students about what he learned in his most recent book, a memoir of a trip to Selma, AL, in 2018 to march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Markward went on to explore how he and others contribute to systems of oppression.

During his visit, Markward also discussed his other book "Free the Teachers: A Guide to Joyful Teaching and Learning." He generously donated copies of both books to the University.

"It was a pleasure to have Dr. Markward back on campus to discuss his books and his experiences," College of Education and Human Services Director of Development Emily GIllett said. "Our students learn so much when alumni come back to pour into them. We are lucky to have Dr. Markward as a Leatherneck."

Markward is donating proceeds from the sale of his book to WIU to assist in enhancing the intercultural competence of all students and employees and creating pathways to advance diversity at all levels.
