Just Hired! Through the experiences of local, regional, national and international students, Western Illinois University has some incredible alumni who are changing the world in the workforce. This series will feature students from all over the world who are hired post-graduation.
MACOMB, IL - - Meet Leonard Anyan-Darko, a Western Illinois University Geographic Information Science (GIS) and Geoenvironment graduate, who has been hired by Nash County Tax Collections in Nashville, NC.
"I'm in charge of making property maps to help appraisers value property and tax citizens accordingly," Anyan-Darko said.
Anyan-Darko found this position on the Government Jobs website. After applying, he received an invitation for an in-person interview.
"The interview process was very direct, and the interviewer liked me and vice versa," Anyan-Darko said. "We spoke a lot about some projects I knew about and they were really impressed with the courses I took in school. I got the job two days later."
To land this position and to succeed in his career, Anyan-Darko relied on everything he learned at WIU, especially the guidance in cartography from Professor of GIS Christopher Sutton.
"The cartography class with Professor Sutton really prepared me for making maps in real-life situations. He also helped us create portfolios for our works, which really impressed my interviewers and made the whole process easier for me," Anyan-Darko said.
To stay involved with WIU, Anyan-Darko maintains the connection he created with professors and students and supports the school through social media.
"I stay in contact with my professors and current students through mail and other platforms," Anyan-Darko said. "I also follow WIU on all social media platforms in order to stay informed and up-to-date on current issues."
