Editor's Note: This is a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB, IL - - For Daniel Roberts, a senior Communication major, the community at Western Illinois University is unique.

"When I think about WIU, I think of the Leatherneck community and the high caliber people I have met during my time as a student here," Roberts said.

For Roberts, Leathernecks are people who strive to both grow and influence those around them.

"Being a Leatherneck means you are constantly learning to uplift those around you through an iterative approach to your own growth," Roberts said.

Roberts' favorite Leatherneck memory is his participation in the 2024 Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Summit with the other WIU chapter executive board members.

Roberts credits WIU with preparing him to build his career.

"WIU has prepared me going forward in my career, through experiential learning, to better adapt to volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity," Roberts said.

On campus, Roberts served as the president of the WIU Student Chapter of the SHRM for two years.

Roberts' advice to those considering studying at WIU is to join a supportive and inspiring community to start exploring the possibilities of the future.

"Pursue your goals at WIU if you want to experience a close community of high-caliber people who have made it their mission for you to reach your potential," Roberts said.

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students, alumni, faculty and staff to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
