Just Hired! Through the experiences of local, regional, national and international students, Western Illinois University has some incredible alumni who are changing the world in the workforce. This series will feature students from all over the world who are hired post-graduation.

MACOMB, IL - - Meet Cierra Johnson, a Western Illinois University Specialist in School Psychology graduate, who has been hired by the Naperville Community Unit School District (CUSD) 203.

"The school is known for its academic excellence, strong community support and commitment to emotional well-being," Johnson said. "District 203 is a leader in preparing students for lifelong success."

Johnson was hired as a school psychology specialist. She was drawn to Naperville CUSD's strong values and its impact on the community, which led her to apply for the position.

"After my application was reviewed, I was contacted by the district supervisor of Psychological Services and participated in multiple rounds of interviews with various team members," Johnson said. "The process was thorough and reflective of the district's commitment to finding the right fit and I was honored to be extended an offer."

At WIU, Johnson had many opportunities to gain practical experience and strengthen her skills. She completed an assistantship with the Regional Office of Education 26, co-presented research entitled Evaluating Commonly Used Interventions to Inform MTSS in Rural Districts at the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) convention, completed a high-volume internship at Glenbrook North High School on the North Shore and participated in a 20-day rotation at a Therapeutic Day School.

"WIU's School Psychology graduate program emphasized cultural competence, advocacy for student well-being and collaboration with school teams—all of which have been essential in my current role," Johnson said. "Through hands-on practice and targeted training, I became confident in conducting psychoeducational assessments, designing and implementing evidence-based interventions, contributing to crisis prevention efforts and promoting positive school climates—skills that directly prepared me for success in Naperville CUSD 203."

As a proud alumna, Johnson plans to stay involved with WIU by supporting the School Psychology program.
