September 11, 2025

Just Hired! Through the experiences of local, regional, national and international students, Western Illinois University has some incredible alumni who are changing the world in the workforce. This series will feature students from all over the world who are hired post-graduation.
MACOMB/MOLINE, IL –– Meet Kennedy Roggenbauer, a Western Illinois University Law Enforcement and Justice Administration (LEJA) student, who was recently hired as a loss prevention detective at TJ Maxx, a national retail chain.
Roggenbauer found the position through Indeed, a platform she frequently used with support from WIU's career resources.
"My university encouraged us to utilize platforms like Indeed to find jobs aligned with our career goals and I focused on roles related to investigations and criminal justice," Roggenbauer said.
After applying online with a tailored resume and cover letter, she completed a phone screening with the store's loss prevention manager and was invited to an in-person interview.
"We discussed my education in LEJA, as well as my interest in investigative work. I emphasized my attention to detail, observational skills and desire to work behind the scenes," Roggenbauer said. "Shortly after the interview, I was offered the position and accepted right away."
Roggenbauer says her major at WIU directly prepared her for her current role.
"At WIU, I learned how to think critically, observe behavior and apply real-world investigative skills. My LEJA degree directly prepared me for my role in loss prevention," Roggenbauer said. "As one of my professors said, ‘Good investigators don't just look — they notice.' That mindset has stuck with me every day on the job."
Looking ahead, Roggenbauer plans to remain connected to her alma mater.
"I plan to stay involved with WIU by connecting with future students through alumni events, offering career advice and possibly mentoring students interested in investigative work," Roggenbauer said. "WIU played a key role in my journey and I'd love to give back by supporting others."
