MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - Former Professor of Western Illinois University Robert Wayne Jefferson, 86, of Macomb, a distinguished educator, scholar and academic leader, passed away March 25, leaving behind a legacy of more than four decades in higher education.
Born on June 5, 1939, in Davenport, IA, to Lewis and Virginia Jefferson. He grew up on a farm in Central Iowa, where he developed a strong work ethic that would guide him throughout his life. He married Sally Ann Wallace on June 11, 1961, in Reinbeck, IA. She survives.
Robert and his wife Sally Ann settled in Macomb 1960 to raise their children and embark on a long and distinguished 41 years career in university teaching, scholarship and administration, beginning in 1965 on the College of Business faculty at WIU, where he taught advertising, survey research, industrial marketing and MBA courses, earning a reputation as a dedicated professor and mentor who challenged and inspired his students.
Throughout his career at WIU, Professor Jefferson held several leadership roles, including serving as Chair of the Marketing and Finance Department, Dean of the College of Business and Associate Provost. His leadership helped shape the university's business programs and strengthen its academic reputation.
As a committed scholar, Jefferson co-authored a widely used marketing textbook with WIU colleagues in 1978, which has been adopted by several large universities.
He will be remembered for his academic leadership, warmth and his dedication to his students and colleagues. His influence extended beyond the classroom, shaping the careers and lives of those he mentored.
Jefferson is survived by his beloved wife, Sally Ann; his daughters Diane Gilbert, Karen Kelso, his son Kurt Jefferson; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Gilbert, Jason Gilbert, Jill Van Dolah, Kelly George, Jenna Dively, Megan Jefferson, and Nicole Ritter; eight great-grandchildren: Aden Gilbert, Oliver Gilbert, Devyn Gilbert, Cade Van Dolah, Everly George, Bennett Van Dolah, Beckett George and Griffin Ritter.
He will be remembered by the many friends, colleagues and students whose lives he touched.
