WIU Jazz Festival Feb. 15-17 to Feature Guest Artists; School Bands; Vocalist Dianne Reeves

MACOMB, IL -- More than 30 high school, junior high school and college bands and ensembles from across Illinois and northeast Iowa will be on the Western Illinois University campus Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 15-17 for the 28th WIU Jazz Festival.
The Jazz Festival kicks off with a guest artist jam session from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15 at the Parkview Room of the Macomb Dining Company.
Guest artists include Bobby Shew, trumpet, from Van Nuys, CA; Tom Garling, trombone, from Chicago; Mike Flack, piano, from Chicago; Mike Lee, tenor saxophone, from Montclair, NJ; WIU alumnus Toby Curtright, bass, from Peoria; and Paul Wertico, drums, from Chicago.
Clinics and competition for participating bands and ensembles will be held Friday, Feb. 16 and Saturday, Feb. 17 in the University Union and Browne and Sallee halls.
Vocalist Dianne Reeves, a three-time Grammy nominee sponsored by the WIU Bureau of Cultural Affairs and WLRB Radio in Macomb, will perform in conjunction with the Jazz Festival at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16 in Western Hall. Tickets ($20, $18 and $15 for the public and $16, $14 and $12 for WIU students with I.D.) may be purchased at the WIU Union Box Office, 309-298-1254, or at the door prior to the performance.
Jazz Festival competition will be held in six divisions: junior high and middle schools; 1A high schools with an enrollment up to 300 students; 2A high schools with 301 to 600 student enrollment; 3A high schools with 601 to 1,000 student enrollment; and 4A high schools with more than 1,000 enrollment; and competition among schools with second bands. There will also be non-competitive bands participating.
Daily admission for events in the Union and Browne Hall are $5 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens. For more information, contact the WIU Bands Office, 309-298-1505.
