MACOMB, IL – Pinckney Benedict, the author of the recent story collection, "Miracle Boy and Other Stories," is the Fall 2010 Western Illinois University Lola Austin Case Writer-in-Residence. He will visit Macomb Monday, Oct. 18–Friday, Oct. 22.

Benedict will be in the Simpkins Hall Writing Center Wednesday (Oct. 20) for an interview and question and answer session beginning at 4 p.m. He will have a reading and book signing starting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 21) in the University Union Sandburg Theatre. Both events are open free to the public.

Along with these events, Benedict will meet with students individually to discuss their writing.

Benedict published his most recent collection, "Miracle Boy and Other Stories," (Press 53) this year. Prior, he has published two collections of short fiction ("Town Smokes," Ontario Review Press, 1987, and "The Wrecking Yard," Nan A. Talese Books/Doubleday, 1992), and a novel, "Dogs of God" (Nan A. Talese Books/Doubleday, 1992), all three of which were named Notable Books by the New York Times. His stories have appeared in numerous publications, including Esquire, Zoetrope: All-Story, StoryQuarterly, Ontario Review, Appalachian Heritage, the O. Henry Award series, the New Stories from the South series, the Pushcart Prize series and The Oxford Book of American Short Stories.

Benedict graduated from Princeton University and the Iowa Writers Workshop and is now a professor in the English department at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Western Illinois' Lola Austin Case Writer-in-Residence Endowment is designed to nurture upcoming writers by providing learning for a lifetime through extended residencies for visiting writers and greater opportunities for more interaction between students and established writers.
