The United Nations and Climate Action - From COP30 to WIU
Time: 4:15 PM - 5:30 PM
Location: University Union, Sandburg Theatre + The 'Neck
Description: This public interdisciplinary event will provide WIU and Macomb participants a link to events on the ground during COP30 in Belém, Brazil, where Dr. Everett Hamner (Professor of English) will be a UNFCCC Observer. COP30 is the annual global climate conference that is working to apply and expand the 2015 Paris Agreement's commitments, and Dr. Hamner will share some basic thoughts via Zoom about where things stand with climate destruction, why we need to care, and about what he's experienced to that point in Brazil. Then our moderator (Dr. Amy Carr, Professor of Religious Studies) and our in-person panelists (Dr. Heather McIlvaine-Newsad, Professor of Anthropology; Dr. Joel Gruver, Professor of Soil Science and Sustainable Ag; and Dr. Maureen Bezold, Associate Professor of Public Health) will share their own thoughts and help connect global climate action to realities in Macomb and the region, dialoguing with each other and Dr. Hamner before opening for a larger Q&A. This will occur in Sandburg Theatre at the University Union from 4:15-5:30 PM, with refreshments afterward down the hall in The 'Neck.
